Rimadyl (carprofen) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in dogs for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the control of postoperative pain following soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.

• Use Only Under Vet Supervision: All dogs should undergo a complete history and physical exam before starting NSAID therapy. Laboratory monitoring may be recommended prior to and during treatment.

• Contraindications/Cautions:

  • For use in dogs only; not for cats.

  • Do not use in dogs with hypersensitivity to carprofen.

  • Avoid concurrent use with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids.

  • Use with caution in dogs with renal, hepatic, or cardiovascular disease, bleeding disorders, or those on diuretic therapy.

  • Not established as safe in dogs < 6 weeks of age, pregnant, lactating, or breeding dogs.

• Adverse Reactions: The most common include gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, and appetite changes. Other potential adverse effects include lethargy, jaundice, incoordination, seizures, and behavioral changes. Rare but serious reactions can occur suddenly and may be fatal. Discontinue use immediately and contact a veterinarian if signs of intolerance appear.

• Directions: Administer orally at 2 mg per lb. of body weight daily (either as a single 2 mg/lb. dose once daily or divided as 1 mg/lb. twice daily). For postoperative pain, administer ~2 hours before surgery. Caplets are scored and may be divided into half-caplet increments. Ensure full dose is consumed.

• Ingredients: Carprofen 75 mg (per caplet).

• Storage: Store at 59–86°F (15–30°C).

• Regulatory: Prescription required; federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
