Rimadyl (carprofen) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in dogs for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the control of postoperative pain following soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.

• Contraindications/Cautions:

  • For dogs only; not for use in cats.

  • Do not use in dogs hypersensitive to carprofen.

  • Avoid concurrent use with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids.

  • Use with caution in dogs with renal, hepatic, or cardiovascular disease, bleeding disorders, or those receiving diuretics.

  • Safety not established in dogs < 6 weeks of age, pregnant, lactating, or breeding dogs.

• Adverse Reactions: The most common include vomiting, diarrhea, appetite changes, and lethargy. More serious reactions (including jaundice, seizures, or behavioral changes) may occur and can be fatal in rare cases. Discontinue immediately and contact a veterinarian if intolerance signs appear.

• Directions: Administer orally at 2 mg per lb. of body weight daily (either as a single 2 mg/lb. dose once daily or divided as 1 mg/lb. twice daily). For postoperative pain, give ~2 hours before surgery. Chewables are scored for half-tablet dosing; ensure the entire dose is consumed.

• Ingredients: Carprofen 25 mg (per chewable tablet).

• Storage: Store at 59–86°F (15–30°C).

• Regulatory: Prescription required; federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
