Prednisone is a potent anti-inflammatory steroid intended for use in dogs. It is prescribed to manage a variety of collagen, dermal, allergic, ocular, otic, and musculoskeletal conditions known to respond to corticosteroid therapy. Common uses include treatment for nonspecific eczema, summer dermatitis, burns, acute urticaria, allergic dermatitis, asthma, and pollen sensitivities. Prednisone can also be used for certain chronic or recurrent diseases such as ulcerative colitis and nephrosis.

In cases of acute adrenal insufficiency, prednisone may help correct carbohydrate metabolism defects and improve the diuretic response. However, because it lacks significant mineralocorticoid activity, other corticosteroids like hydrocortisone or cortisone may be preferred when salt retention is needed.
