Methimazole is a prescription antithyroid medication formulated for cats to help control hyperthyroidism, a condition often seen in middle-aged to older felines. This condition is caused by an overproduction of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), leading to an increased metabolic rate. Methimazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of these hormones, helping to restore and maintain a healthy metabolic balance.

• Strength & Count: 5 mg tablet; 1 tablet.

• Class: Antithyroid medication (thioamide derivative).

• Indication (Cats): Controls hyperthyroidism by reducing the production of excessive thyroid hormones. Helps address associated symptoms such as weight loss, excessive thirst/urination, diarrhea, shedding, and hyperactivity.

• Feline Safety: Not for use in cats with hypersensitivity to methimazole, carbimazole, or polyethylene glycol; primary liver disease; renal failure; autoimmune disease; hematological disorders; or in pregnant or lactating queens. Monitor for potential adverse effects including agranulocytosis, liver toxicity, and hypothyroidism.

• Use Only Under Vet Supervision: Requires careful dosing and routine monitoring of TSH and free T4 levels to maintain a euthyroid state. Monitor for signs of illness such as fever, sore throat, or skin eruptions, and report immediately to a veterinarian.

• Contraindications/Cautions: Contraindicated in cats with known hypersensitivity to the drug or related compounds, and in those with certain pre-existing medical conditions as listed above. May interact with anticoagulants, beta blockers, digitalis glycosides, and theophylline.

• Storage: Store at controlled room temperature (68°–77°F / 20°–25°C).
