Furosemide is a Lasix diuretic prescribed to help treat high blood pressure, heart failure, swelling (edema), and certain kidney or liver diseases in dogs and cats. It works by removing excess fluid and sodium from the body, reducing strain on the heart and relieving inflammation and other uncomfortable symptoms.

• Strength & Form: 10 mg/ml syrup; 60 ml bottle

• Class: Loop diuretic (saluretic)

• Indications: Management of edema, heart failure, hypertension, and fluid retention due to kidney or liver disease

• Administration: Oral syrup; typically 1–2 mg/lb body weight (approx. 2.5–5 mg/kg), given once or twice daily as prescribed by a veterinarian

• Directions: Give with meals, at the same time each day. Do not exceed prescribed dosage. Dosage may be adjusted based on pet’s condition and response

• Cautions/Warnings:

  • Potent diuretic—excess amounts may cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, or low blood pressure

  • Watch for early signs of imbalance: increased thirst, lethargy, drowsiness, restlessness, fatigue, reduced urination, gastrointestinal upset, or rapid heartbeat

  • May lower calcium levels; potassium supplementation may be necessary

  • Contraindicated in pets with anuria (inability to produce urine)

  • Use cautiously in pets with progressive kidney disease, cirrhosis, electrolyte depletion, or diabetes

  • May interact with other medications including digitalis, aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, potassium-depleting steroids, and anesthetics

  • Sudden fluid/electrolyte shifts in cirrhotic animals may trigger hepatic coma—monitor closely

• Ingredients: Alcohol 11.5% USP (preservative), FD&C Yellow #6, D&C Yellow #10 (color additives)

• Storage: Store at controlled room temperature (59–86°F) in a tightly sealed, light-resistant container. Protect from moisture

• Regulatory: Prescription required; federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian
