Azithromycin (Zithromax) is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic used in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infections in animals. It works by preventing bacteria from producing essential proteins, stopping their growth and replication so the immune system can eliminate the infection. Azithromycin is effective against a broad range of bacterial organisms, including Hemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Mycobacterium avium. Its long half-life allows for once-daily dosing and shorter treatment courses compared to many other antibiotics.
